Quantifying time perception during virtual reality gameplay using a multimodal biosensor-instrumented headset: a feasibility study

We have all experienced the sense of time slowing down when we are bored or speeding up focused, engaged, excited about a task. In virtual reality (VR), perception can be key aspect related to flow, immersion, engagement, and ultimately, overall quality experience. While several studies explored changes in using questionnaires, limited attempted characterize them objectively. this paper, propose use multimodal biosensor-embedded VR headset capable measuring electroencephalography (EEG), electrooculography (EOG), electrocardiography (ECG), head movement data while user is immersed environment. Eight gamers were recruited play commercial action game comprised puzzle-solving tasks first-person shooting combat. After gameplay, ratings given across multiple dimensions, including (1) flowing differently than usual (2) losing time. Several features extracted from biosignals, ranked based on two-step feature selection procedure, then mapped predicted rating Gaussian process regressor. Top found come four signal modalities two regressors, one for each scale, shown achieve results significantly better chance. An in-depth analysis top presented with hope that insights used inform design more engaging immersive experiences.
